Oxpens tree maintenance taking place in February

This month (February 2026), OxWED will be carrying out scheduled tree maintenance on the Oxpens site in areas nearest to the river and Oxpens Meadow.

It will include the removal of the upper branches of several trees – a process known as pollarding.

No trees will be removed as part of this work.  It is simply maintenance and management undertaken by professional tree surgeons.

Pollarding is a regular part of tree management which encourages fresh, healthy growth, and often extends the lifespan of trees.  Clearing these upper branches – and those in poor health – will also allow more light through to the towpath, making it easier and safer for people using the route.

The work is similar to the last round of tree maintenance which took place in July 2025.

Access will remain open throughout but anyone using the paths may be asked to wait briefly by the contractor team who will hold people safely back during certain moments when branches are coming down and for their own safety.

Oxford City Council is aware of the work and the Council’s Tree Officer has been informed.

Weather permitting, the work will begin from 25 February 2026, and will be completed before the end of that week.
